CAMx v7.00


Version 7.00 is a major update, including new features, modifications and bug fixes since the release of v6.50. New features include:

  • NetCDF gridded input files, including emissions, meteorology, and initial/boundary concentrations; the model will accept a mix of netCDF or original Fortran binary input files for maximum flexibility and backward compatibility.
  • New 3-D gridded emissions file in netCDF format for certain non-point source sectors that are emitted above the surface and have traditionally been input to the model as elevated point sources.
  • Support for multiple point, 2-D and 3-D gridded input emission files, alleviating the need to merge components into single input files.
  • The bi-directional ammonia algorithm of Zhang et al. (2010).
  • Chemistry for dimethyl sulfide (DMS) has been added to the CB6r4 gas-phase mechanism.
  • Eight new primary PM2.5 elemental species (Fe, Mg, Mn, Ca, K, Al, Si, Ti) can be optionally included in the CF aerosol treatment.
  • OSAT/PSAT have been updated to support one-way nesting, which expands model flexibility and facilitates CAMx hemispheric-to-regional downscaling source apportionment applications.
  • Several updates to secondary organic aerosol chemistry.

Version 6.50 includes new features, modifications and bug fixes since the release of v6.40.  New features include:

  • NetCDF gridded output files, including the core model average concentration and deposition files, and Probing Tool output.
  • EQSAM for inorganic gas-aerosol partitioning as an alternative to ISORROPIA.
  • Chemical Process Analysis (CPA) extended to all gas-phase mechanisms.
  • Chemistry mechanism CB6r2h and SAPRC07TC extended to include source apportionment.

Version 6.40 includes new features, modifications and bug fixes since the release of v6.30.  New features include:

  • A new CB6 chemistry mechanism (CB6r4 as Mechanism 4).
  • A new in-line inorganic iodine (Ix) emissions algorithm.
  • Major revision to the SOAP secondary organic aerosol chemistry/partitioning algorithm.
  • Updated aqueous metal-catalyzed and peroxide reactions for sulfate.
  • Major revision to the wet deposition algorithm.
  • Source apportionment (OSAT/APCA and PSAT) updates to account for chemistry modifications.
  • Removal of the separate ocean mask (aka land/water mask) field. Now the distinction between ocean and fresh water bodies is made explicitly in the CAMx input landuse file to ensure that the in-line Ix emissions are emitted from ocean bodies only.
  • Faster ACM2 solver from CMAQ v5.1.
  • Revised anthropogenic and biogenic classification of SOA precursors in the VBS SOA option.

Version 6.30 includes new features, modifications and bug fixes since the release of v6.20.  New features include:

  • Several modifications to improve model speed by 15-50%, depending on compiler, chipset and model configuration.
  • Major update to OSAT to account for NOx recycling of ozone and to improve consistency with PSAT nitrate chemistry.
  • New Mercator and Polar projections from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model.
  • New surface albedo treatment for snow following the approach in the WRF/NOAH land surface model.  
  • Extended surface chemistry model to include Zhang dry deposition and snow cover.
  • A new CB6 chemistry mechanism (CB6r3 as Mechanism 4).
  • A new SAPRC07 chemistry mechanism replacing the SAPRC99 mechanism.

Version 6.20 includes new features, modifications, and bug fixes since the release of v6.11.  New features include:

  • A hybrid 1.5-dimensional (1.5-D) Volatility Basis Set (VBS) treatment for secondary organic aerosols. 
  • A new optional top boundary condition (BC) input file, derived from three-dimensional output from global models, to improve the characterization of chemicals entering the model top.
  • A new CB6 halogen chemistry mechanism (CB6r2h as Mechanism 3).

Version 6.11 includes enhancements and bug fixes to version 6.10.  New features include:

  • A new CB6 chemistry mechanism (CB6r2) including emitted methane (ECH4).
  • Extensively updated Plume-in-Grid (PiG) submodel, including a condensed fast gas-phase chemical mechanism for GREASD PiG. 
  • A new DDM treatement for PM (PM-DDM).
  • Updated ISORROPIA from v1.6 to v1.7.
  • Expanded RTRAC probing tool allowing tracers to directly use photolysis and deposition rates calculated for any core model species.   
  • A new surface model treating chemical reactions of deposited material and re-emission.

Version 6.00 includes the following additional capabilities over v5.41:

  • Revised Input Formats: All major gridded input/output fields are now in a common format.
  • The process to generate photolysis (J) rates and their use in CAMx has changed:
    1) The albedo/haze/ozone file now contains only ozone column data - other fields are internally calculated or moved to other files.  Use the new "O3MAP" pre-processor.
    2) The TUV photolysis pre-processor has been updated. 
    3) CAMx interpolates lookup J rates to cell-specific values of solar zenith, height above ground, terrain height, and albedo.
    4) The original RADM cloud adjustment has been removed. In-line TUV is now the only cloud/haze adjustment scheme.
  • Mercury chemistry has been updated to include adsorption of Hg(II) to PM and gas-phase reactions with ambient bromine (reactions with molecular chlorine have been removed).
